A frontier is wild, dangerous, and unpredictable. But it’s also a place of passion, goodness, and untamed beauty. And this is true sexually as well. So while our sexual frontiers bring a healthy dose of fear, this is also an adventure we must courageously embrace to discover the full depth and meaning of who God created us to be as sexual beings.

On the one hand, we see how destructive sexuality can be when left unchecked and everyone simply follows their own sinful pleasures. In reaction to this, we often then try to tame it. And while well meaning, this is like castrating a stallion – more manageable, but no longer generative.

Entering our sexual frontier is not to suggest anything goes. God has given us guardrails and signposts even in the wilderness. But it is a reminder not to play it safe and shortchange our sexual potential.

For instance, secret fantasies and desires might have hidden goodness buried inside. And we miss the mark when we blindly indulge – selfishly consuming without considering the impact. But we also miss the mark when we try to ignore or repress these things simply because they make us uncomfortable.

To be sure, we take our guiding principles with us. But this also gives us the confidence and courage to freely explore – leaving no stone of our sexual self unturned. And it’s here we discover the wild goodness of God reflected through our sexuality. While the potential for distortions are great and many, these still pale in comparison to the glory and profound beauty also available.

And we leave our life and relationships barren when we play it safe and don’t step out into the unknown with God.

In the end, trust God even as you enter the wild and untamed parts of your sexual self. It’s on this frontier that you discover the generative power and depth of your sexuality.
